Sophie Withaeckx is an professor in philosophy at Maastricht University. Previously, she worked as a coordinator and post-doc researcher at RHEA (Gender, Diversity and Intersectionality Expertise Center) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and as a teacher and researcher at Odisee University of Applied Sciences. She has master’s degrees in African Languages and Cultures (University of Ghent) and International Politics (University of Antwerp) and obtained her PhD in Philosophy and Moral Sciences from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 2014.
Her research is situated in ethics, feminist and decolonial philosophy and gender studies. Within this she focused on the themes of gender-based violence; transnationalism, (superdiversity) and migration; diversity and decolonization in higher education. In her current research on transnational adoption, she examines which ethical and normative views underlie this practice and how they (re)produce existing inequalities.
